EU HR Ashton: EU will never accept the decay of BiH
BHT, FTV, RTRS, NTV Hayat, Dnevni avaz front page and pg. 5, Oslobodjenje front page “Ashton in Sarajevo: BiH has reached its turning point” and pg. 2, Dnevni list pg. 11, Glas Srpske pg. 2 – The European Union (EU) would never allow the decay of BiH, stated Baroness Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Unionfor Foreign Affairs and Security Policyand Vice-President of the European Commission, in the interview with Dnevni avaz, adding that the EU is fully committed to solving of the problems in BiH.
“BiH is at the important turning point in its political development. This country has a European perspective, like the rest of the Western Balkans. However, I am concerned about the current political situation in BiH. Lack of progress, reforms and political dialogue is reason why BiH lies behind all other countries from the region. BiH has a great opportunity in 2010, to move towards EU membership: You will elect a new government this October, which will lead your country for the next four years. This will be a crucial period for your country. Many key decisions will have to be made during forthcoming years in order for this country to move ahead towards European Integration. This can only be reached through compromise and consensus,” Ashton said, adding that the EU is fully committed to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of BiH, within its current borders, determined by Dayton peace agreement (DPA).
“There is no alternative. EU and our international partners would never accept the decay of BiH. We have nothing against a strong Republika Srpska (RS), as a part of a functional BiH, but if RS jeopardizes the functioning of the state or undermines the DPA, than the RS is causing damage to its own future", she stressed, reiterating that the future of BiH lies within EU, “as one country and within its current borders”.
In her statement for Nezavisne novine, Ashton announced that the EU intends to closely monitor the situation in BiH in the future.
“I will submit a report about my visit to BiH to EU ministers of foreign affairs,” she stressed, while refusing to comment on the question who is to blame for the deadlock in reform processes in BiH.

“Those who intend to promote referendum must bear in minds that in the past, referendums have always been considered as very provocative in a political sense, which means that one should discuss this issue very carefully. USA would not tolerate any referendum question that can be considered as a threat towards the structure of Dayton Peace Agreement (DPA), as well as brining into question the competences of the High Representative in BiH,” stated English, adding that the DPA must be respected in every way.
